Swaner Nature Preserve and Eco Center Service Project

Swaner Nature Preserve and Eco Center Service Project 2014
The Swaner Nature Preserve and Eco Center located on the east side of Kimball Junction, near Park City, Utah, provides a natural wet land and conservation area for local residents and visitors to enjoy. The center features walking paths and observation decks that allow access to local streams and marshes and the wildlife that live there. It also provides educational displays and a great learning center and incredible views of the surrounding mountains.
To help maintain the preserve, volunteers from Liberty Peak Apartments, located just across the valley from the preserve, met at the north east entry to the wetlands area and organized to do battle with the spread of thistle plants that grow along the north boundary.
These noxious weeds spread quickly if not controlled and to help in this effort volunteers were provided gloves, pruning shears and trash bags and asked to cut the blossoms off of the existing plants to keep them from going to seed.
It was a sticky job but the volunteers jumped right in and soon filled multiple trash bags with the prickly flowers. In just a few hours’ work they were able to cover almost all of the north fence line helping to restrict the spread of this prolific plant. When the project was complete the back of the Eco Center van was stuffed full of bags of blossoms.
After unloading and disposing the bags the volunteers enjoyed the ice cold water, soft drinks and treats provided by Cowboy Properties. Everyone took pride in the work they had accomplished and in helping the Swaner Nature Preserve provide a great place for everyone to visit.
