Cowboy Pledge 2013 Back to School Backpacks Drive

The 2013 Cowboy Pledge Back to School Backpacks for Kids event was organized to provide an opportunity for Cowboy Properties apartment residents and their families and friends, to donate backpacks and school supplies to local elementary school children.

This year’s event ran from August 15 through August 27, 2013. Residents and staff members of all of the Cowboy Properties apartment communities in the Salt Lake City, Ogden, Park City and Heber City, Utah areas received an invitation to participate. Collection bins were provided by Cowboy Pledge at each apartment community and residents and staff members dropped of a wide variety of school supplies and backpacks.

Donations included 167 boxes of crayons, 26 boxes of colored pencils, 117 pencil sharpeners, 135 rulers and 118 erasers. Writing supplies included 380 lined notebooks, 1,400 pencils and 340 pens. Other donations included glue sticks, report covers, workbooks, colored markers, three ring binders and other useful items. Cowboy Pledge provided 100 backpack style school bags and residents and management staff donated another 14 backpacks.

On August 28, 2013 an enthusiastic group of volunteers met at the Harmony Gardens Senior Apartments in West Valley City, Utah, to sort the donations. Everyone had fun counting the items and determining how many of each could be included in the backpacks. The volunteers then worked as a team to fill each backpack making sure that each one had the required items.

The final count was 114 backpacks filled with at least 3 notebooks, 10 pencils, 3 pens, a ruler, an eraser, a glue stick and a pencil sharpener. Leftover items were divided and boxed up so they could be donated along with the backpacks to the schools that had been selected.

In the first week of September, 2013, Cowboy Pledge delivered 20 backpacks to 5 elementary schools located in Ogden, Taylorsville, Salt Lake City, and West Jordan, Utah. The backpacks were distributed to the children by the school counselors. The principals and counselors at each school were very grateful for the donations and indicated that they would be a great help to the children who received them.

Cowboy Pledge appreciates the generous support of the residents and staff of each Cowboy Properties apartment community and the volunteers who helped sort the donations and assemble the backpacks. We hope that everyone who participated had an opportunity to share in the great feeling of helping children to learn and grow.
